Excerpt from Hollywood in Focus: The Golden Age’ by Roderick B. Scriberhouse:

“Throughout the 1930s, Hollywood found great success in two fledgling movie genres: the gangster thriller and the monster picture. Pioneering producer John R. Clayen, head of Screener Pictures International, was the first to see the commercial sense in combining the two. And so, in the fall of 1937, Screener unleashed the world’s first ‘Gangster-Horror’, Winters Howl. Combining the artistic talent of writer Stewart Goldstein and director Walt Krausse, the movie was a runaway success. With audiences queuing around the block, it wasn’t long before Hollywood churned out more pictures in a similar vein, including 'G-Men Meet Frankenstein' and 'Invisible Public Enemy'. These titles, however, all failed to match the success of Clayen’s hit, and the genre quickly came to an end in the early 1940s. Winter’s Howl though remains a hidden gem among classic horror enthusiasts.”

My entry to the 2011 EMP poster contest. It was quite an easy choice picking the brief - gangsters, tommy guns, a big werewolf, and a load of snow! What's not to like? To me the brief screamed 1930s/40s studio genre picture, and a perfect excuse to work on another retro poster design. Took a lot of effort to get the details right, from the 30s hand-painted style to the period-esque fonts. There's also a cunning anagram included that I'm quite proud of! Fingers crossed people like it...

All imagery was hand drawn, scanned in, and painted in Photoshop. Free fonts used (all from dafont.com) are Artbrush, Mouse Deco, and Zombie, plus Brush Script Std, all modified to get more of a hand-painted look.

Congratulations on the EMP contest. This was really creative. Awesome anagram and I love how you didn't give away that she was the wolf in the poster!

I was definitely confused by the excerpt, knowing it was 100% false, I was like "where's he getting this from??"
